I have to be honest. This Winter has been super tough on me. November is always a slower month for photography. It’s the month where people hesitate to book a photoshoot because they missed the fall color and are now waiting for the new snow to freshen up the landscape. This Winter’s warm weather and lack of snow, has left the landscape frozen in a gray, tan, and brown pallet, smeared with boot sucking muck. It’s been 4 months now, with no sight of cooler weather or snow to save the landscape. This doesn’t mean it’s an unusable landscape, it’s just a more difficult one for people to visualize as being artistically pleasing until they see the resulting images.

As a full time photographer, it’s scary to have a lull in work. Part of me says, “Enjoy the quiet, because May - October you won’t have two seconds to catch your breath,” while the other part of me says, “You’ll be dead from eating ramen noodles by April Fool’s!” I brush off the tightening anxiety and immerse myself in brainstorming ways to keep myself busy in personal projects, clientele building, upgrading the client Prep Guides, researching and educating myself on better business practices, and hunting down every lead for a photoshoot I can find.

I tell myself to keep my chin up and not to lose hope on another decent snow fall, because when it does arrive, I will be ready for it!

For now, enjoy one of my favorite photoshoots from last winter. No, this is not my Winston, but his younger half sister, Sassy. Before heading to school, Taylor and Sassy lived just north of Muskegon and often invested in photoshoots at Clear Springs Nature Preserve to capture Sassy’s adventures as she grew into the beautiful girl she is today. She was a doll to photograph!

I am looking forward to photographing more dogs this year, capturing more memories and creating more art work from unique personalities each pup presents.
