Annie the Dalmatian

Photographing Annie, a stunning Dalmatian in Louisville Kentucky, has been a highlight of my year!

We met Annie and her owner downtown and ventured throughout a 3 block radius, utilizing both the urban and garden landscapes we had available. She has an amazing level of obedience and a bottomless drive to please her owner, which in turn allowed me the freedom to place her anywhere for portraits - including paws up on a fire hydrant. I couldn’t pass up using a fire hydrant since this breed is intertwined with the fires, fire fighters, and the evolution of that industry.

If you aren’t familiar with the Dalmatian’s history, here is a bit about their background…

The Dalmatian are one of the breeds that has a disputed origin. Researchers have found ancient artifacts and writings to support the theory that the Dalmatian was founded in the British, Isles, Europe, North Africa and Asia. In the 1800s the breed was closely associated with a swath of Central Europe along the Adriatic Sea, the region once known as Dalmatia.

Dalmatians have a job description that is very unique among AKC breeds: coach dog. Their traditional occupation was to trot beside horse-drawn coaches, and to guard the horses and rig when otherwise unattended.

Back in the 1800s, when horses pulled fire engines, Dalmatians began their long association with firefighters. These days, Dalmatians accompany the famous Budweiser Clydesdales on parade.

They are well known for their spotted coat and unique job description. During their long history, these "coach dogs" have accompanied the horse-drawn rigs of nobles, gypsies, and firefighters. Reserved and dignified, Dalmatians can be aloof with strangers and are dependable watchdogs. With their preferred humans, Dalmatians are bright, loyal, and loving house dogs. They are strong, active athletes with great stamina making a wonderful partner for runners and hikers.

Annie’s best friend is a Phantom Standard Poodle, named Hubble. Hubble had a photoshoot following Annie’s, and after learning of their friendship, I couldn’t help but take a few photos of the kiddos together.
