Sweedish Vallhunds have been on my dream list to photograph and as a potential dog breed that I’d want to own myself. Being able to connect with Jillian and her Vallhund, named Mila, during my travels through Indianapolis Indiana, was a highlight of my season!
If you don’t know much about this ancient breed, here is a bit of history on Vallhunds…
The Vallhund is a breed that nearly went extinct in the 1940s, but was saved by the efforts of Bjorn von Rosen and K.G. Zettersten.
It is believed, between the eighth and ninth century, the blood lines of Vallhunds and Pembroke Welshc Corgis were intertwined (hence the similarities of the breeds) by the Vikings and Welsh, to develop a breed that could be a rugged cattle dog and all-purpose farmhands in western Sweden.
The long and low Swedish Vallhund, Viking Dog of ancient times, is a smart and sociable herder of dense coat and boundless energy. These rugged cattle dogs are known for their zest for life, unique vocalizations, and cheerful demeanor. They are lively herders that are built long and low to the ground in not quite as exaggerated a fashion as their distant cousins the corgis. Their build makes it easier to nip at the heels of cattle and avoid kicks to the head. Balance, power, and smooth movement are breed hallmarks. (Click HERE to learn more about Swedish Vallhunds.)
While the location we chose to photograph Mila in doesn’t match the history of these dogs, it has fueled my passion for the breed and has made me that much more excited to photograph more Vallhunds in landscapes that accent their history, drive to herd, and their brilliant smiles. If you have a Vallhund, please don’t hesitate to reach out!
