Meet the Appaloosa polo pony, named “Pigpen,” and her WAPZ Sobeit foal, named “Sobe Safari!”
When planning my trip to Florida, I knew I wanted to dedicate a bit of my time to photographing personal projects. One of these projects was to photograph horses with unique coats, and the relationship between mare and foal. Pigpen and Safari, owned by Dr. Margaux Buchanan, photographed on her private farm outside of Tampa, Florida, where the perfect fit!
There was NO lack of color with these two, ranging from white, through all the shades of buckskin, chestnut, bays and blacks. They had spots within spots, lightning stripes, and even stripes up the back of Safari’s legs! The more I looked, the more unique markings I fell in love with.
I photographed them first as fine art equine portraits, and then we moved them into a pasture that was kissed by the golden setting sun. I originally wanted to see them move, photographing them trotting, cantering, and playing together throughout the sunset, but these two were so content being close to us, quietly asking for our attention treats and not wanting to play at liberty.
So changing my plans, I photographed them grazing in the pasture together, and then added Margaux in for candid photos. These images really captured her every day relationship with her horses. The simple yet beautiful moments, that make up 99% of our relationship with our horses. These images ended up being some of my favorite photos of the trip to Tampa Florida!
