Karn, the Boykin Spaniel

This is the third year in a row that I have been able to kick off the new year photographing Karn, the Boykin Spaniel. This Canine Photoshoot tradition started in 2024 when I wanted to practice more of my urban photography skills, and we have made sure it has happened again each year.

This session wasn’t done ON New Years Day like those in the past. Weather hasn’t been nice to us in Michigan this year. We were finally able to get out to do this session mid-January in Holland, MI on the Hope College Campus.

Karn has gone through some sessions not being terribly excited about them anymore. He is a smart dog and started to find them a little boring. This time we enrolled his dad to come with on the session, and it worked out to be the key to seeing the fun and playful Karn. Duck Calls do wonders for hunting dogs!

The morning started cold but dry and about halfway through the session it started to snow. It allowed me to shoot through snowflakes and capture more depth and texture in this session. Because of the snow getting increasingly heavy, we had to make sure to end our session in a timely manner, but the couple wanted a few pictures with Karn and them so we spotted a fantastic stairway to capture these moments of them and their beloved canine partner.

It has been an honor to photograph Karn over the years!
